Biography

Ian is a well-qualified, experienced Inspector and former senior manager with many years’ experience in further education and work-based learning. He has been on the inspectorate for post-16 education since 1996. He is a qualified teacher with 25 years’ experience as a senior manager in a further education corporation as Director of Faculty, Director of Curriculum, Director of Estates and was the Senior Designated Person for Child Protection. He spent 23 years managing Engineering and Construction and still takes an active role in the British Association of Construction Heads. He has experience ranging from curriculum design to resourcing and had direct responsibility for apprenticeships and the head of a merchant navy training centre.

Ian is a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Marine Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. He has been an external examiner for several Higher Education Institutions and the Army, and has been a presenter at national conferences.

He has mentored a number of staff in FE, some of whom now hold senior positions in Colleges and the Inspectorate and provided ‘critical friend’ support and guidance for several departments across a range of sector skill areas. In addition, he carries out monitoring visits for new FES providers.
