Apprentices

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a job where you learn, gain experience, and get paid.  You will be an employee with a contract of employment, including holiday leave.  Once you have completed your apprenticeship programme you will have the knowledge and skills required for your chosen career.

Apprenticeships can take between 1 to 5 years to complete. The apprenticeship is funded from contributions made by the government and your employer, known as the apprenticeship levy.

What are the entry requirements for an apprenticeship?

Each apprenticeship has its own level of entry requirements.

Depending on the level, some apprenticeships may:

  • Require previous qualifications, English and Maths, or an area of study related to the apprenticeship.
  • Provide extra training in English and Maths skills, so you are at the right level for your chosen apprenticeship.

Are there any other entry requirements?

You will require an Enhanced DBS where an apprenticeship involves working with children or vulnerable adults.

What is involved in an apprenticeship?

You will be employed as an apprentice in your chosen profession. Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes which will enable you to develop the skills required, there are two elements known as on-the-job and off-the-job training.  On-the-job you will begin to integrate the taught skills you are learning whilst carrying out duties as per your apprentice job description. Off-the-job you will be taught how to apply the skills required within your role, you will have study time, meet with your tutor, and support team/ mentors.  The off the job element equates to 20% of your employed time.

How do I complete the apprenticeship programme?

The End Point Assessment (EPA) is completed after the taught programme has finished and you have completed all the requirements of the apprenticeship standard. Every apprenticeship has an EPA process specifically designed to enable apprentices to evidence they have met the apprenticeship standards. When you begin your apprenticeship, you will be informed of the timescale for the completion of the EPA process.
